Join us for a community celebration of ALL abilities as we create awareness surrounding full integration of people with disabilities.

Celebrate diversity in our community by joining us for activities between 12:00 pm-6:00 pm at the Rochester Civic Theatre on Monday, December 2, 2019.

The Rochester event is inspired by the UN Enable Day celebration held around the world. Allowing flexible attendance, the event schedule is designed to allow you to spend a lunch break or a half day celebrating our disability community.

Participate by connecting with a Human Library living book for a conversation. The Diverse Ability Lab will offer hands on disability experience to take a walk in someone else’s shoes. Short films and artwork will be on display throughout the event. The keynote speaker will share his personal journey back to work as an emergency medicine physician at Mayo Clinic after a spinal cord injury. Networking, ‘experience’ a disability firsthand, and local musicians will follow the speaker.

Dr. Daniel Grossman In September 2017, Emergency Medicine physician Daniel Grossman, MD, was finishing a mountain bike ride in Northern Minnesota when he fell from his bike and suffered a spinal cord injury. He spent over four and a half months in various healthcare settings, including Mayo Clinic.

Our keynote speaker, Dr. Grossman was determined to live his post-injury life with independence and he adopted an attitude of radical acceptance with aggressive goal-setting. Dr. Grossman returned to work as an Emergency Physician at Mayo Clinic within six months of his injury. Dr. Grossman credits his progress to both his clinical teams for always pushing him and responding to his request for “one more time” and to the incredible support of family, friends, and colleagues who slept at his hospital bedside and remain by his side as he continues to learn a “new normal".
