Organization: Heart of the City Taskforce

Organization Mission: Initially, the CAC will be responsible for the selection of a qualified firm to assist with the design for the public spaces of Heart of the City. Once the firm has been selected, the CAC will be responsible for communication, community engagement, collaboration on design concepts, and reporting key milestones to the DMCC board and city of Rochester throughout the 2016 design process.

The 14-member CAC is a collaboration between the city of Rochester and DMC. It will be co-chaired by Rochester Mayor Ardell Brede and Executive Director of Generation Next and former Minneapolis Mayor R.T. Rybak, both current members of the DMC Corporation board of directors.

brede“The CAC members include community members from diverse backgrounds and a broad range of professionals from all age demographics and geographic locations in the community,” says Brede.

The initial appeal for volunteer committee members the importance of including business and property owners, civic leaders, citizen at-large members, partner organizations, design experts, a City Council representative, and a Chateau Theatre Task Force representative.

RTR-06182014-250x300“On behalf of the DMC Corporation board of directors, we are delighted to welcome the members of the Community Advisory Committee,” says Rybak. “This is a very important phase for the Heart of the City, as it extends and enhances the Peace Plaza to create active experiences and engaging gateways to other DMC sub-districts downtown. Our goal is to create public space where truly everyone is welcome and everyone wants to be.”

Initially, the CAC will be responsible for the selection of a qualified firm to assist with the design for the public spaces of Heart of the City. Once the firm has been selected, the CAC will be responsible for communication, community engagement, collaboration on design concepts, and reporting key milestones to the DMCC board and city of Rochester throughout the 2016 design process.

“We are very encouraged by the tremendous response from qualified individuals who expressed interest,” says Mayor Brede. “We look forward to working with the CAC and invite community members to remain involved once the design process begins.”

  • For the commercial sector, we tend to register startup activities (new companies and new commercial projects) that bring diversification and high-impact opportunities to the area.
  • For the non-profit sector, we wish to shine light on all the organizations and services that otherwise labor under relative obscurity.
  • Our hope is that dmcbeam.org will encourage cross-sector collaborations and creative solutions.

While there are a number of registries in the community, dmcbeam.org's  distinct value is to pilot a database with a data structure and categorizations that answer the questions such as: What organizations or projects/programs in our community that have purported relevance with some of the over-arching focuses put forward by initiatives such as DMC, J2G and Health Improvements?

This database could be used as one of the ways to explore the capacities of the community. If you are someone on an exploratory journey to learn about the greater Rochester community. dmcbeam.org could be an interesting first step.

Definitions
The following defines the various project phases:
  1. Available - a product, program or service is in production
  2. Develop - program or application is being developed
  3. Plan - idea is solid, stakeholders are identified, and there is strong commitment to go forward from all parties.
  4. Concept Phase - idea scoped out with enough details to give an early sizing and/or to build a proof of concept
    demonstration
  5. Pre-concept Phase - an early idea or a requirement.
