The Minnesota Department of Education is inviting advocacy groups, parents, and other interested individuals to give us feedback regarding our effort to meet a 2017 legislative requirement to collect student data by detailed race and ethnicity categories set by the U.S. Department of Education for specific groups. MDE is already partnering with five districts to help meet this requirement. These districts will collect this more detailed information for the 2018-2019 school year. This information will be collected for the entire state during the 2019-2020 school year.
You are specifically being asked to provide feedback on the following items which are attached in draft form:
- · Parent Letter (A sample letter for parents explaining the change in legislation)
- · FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions about how and why the information is being collected and how it will and will not be used)
- · Data Collection Form (The sample form that will be provided by Minnesota Department of Education to be used by districts and schools to collect the information)
The feedback session will take place on Monday, October 2 2017 in Conference Center B Room CC17 and CC18 from 6:00 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. Parking is available directly west of the main building.
Please see the attached invitation for further detail about this meeting, the law, and registration deadlines.
If you are unable to attend the feedback session, but would still like to provide feedback, please send your comments and suggestions to me.
Sincerely,
